Brownstone townhouse

New York, 2017

In 2014, a couple in New York with a baby on the way, turned to Hazel Collins Design to outfit their home in what you could call... a bit of a hurry. This couple also highlighted the importance of special pieces (not wanting to use commercial furniture stores). Partnering with Dorothée Mathieux of Maison Gerard, Hazel and her team had access to an entire ‘treasure trove’ of furnishings and artistic pieces to adorn the 19th century, 7,500 square foot home of this thirty-something couple who longed for a luxury home, without the luxury of time to do it!

Despite the fact that the pieces selected were highly sophisticated and delicate, the couple didn’t want a home that looked like no one lived there. “For anything we upholstered, we picked fabrics that could be wiped down or had a colour that wouldn’t show stains.” said Hazel to SPACES Magazine.

The clients were pressed for time from the very start and they longed for a stylish yet practical home. Simple backdrops were adorned with furnishings that brought an explosion of colour to the space, such as a Matthew Mahler painting in the hall and a bold, red lacquer cabinet in the living room. The results were impeccable.

They are just starting out. It is a house they can live with as it is, add to and change.
